What is carbonless paper?
Prior to photocopiers, laser printers and dot matrix printers, there were typewriters. Yes typewriters. And if you wanted to make a duplicate or triplicate of letter you typed - you know, to actually file away for the office copy - you had to use carbon paper.
Yes this was messy and it was a trip remembering this.
Carbonless Copy Paper is a specific type of paper used to get multiple copies without the use of the carbon sheet. Carbonless Paper is a multi-layered paper consisting of two, three or four layers of paper, but up to eight layers of paper is possible. This allows a person to only write once on the top copy and whatever is written is transferred through to the pages beneath producing copies of the top page.
How does carbonless paper work?
There are 3 basic components to Carbonless Paper:-
- 1. TOP Sheet = CB (Coated Back) : The top-sheet is coated on the underside with micro-capsules of ink.
- 2. MIDDLE Sheet/s = CFB (Coated Front and Back): The middle or multiple sheets is coated on the surface with reactive clay and micro-capsules on the underside.
- 3. Bottom Sheet = CF (Coated Front): The bottom sheet.
When writing the pressure of the pen transfers to carbon from the back of the Top sheet and on to next sheet, which has carbon coated on the front surface. If its a triplicate sheet, the middle sheet also has carbon on the back which further transfers the impression of the pen to the last sheet's carbon coated on the front.
Here is a diagram to illustrator how docket book printing with carbon paper works:
What is carbonless paper used for?
It is used in all applications where a number of copies of a document are required, often including the copy of a signature. Some of the more common uses include invoices and delivery notes, receipt books and tax invoices books. Often the various copies are differently coloured to reflect different use - File Copy, Customer Copy, Accounts Copy and Deliverer’s copy.
Secure and Environmentally friendly
Carbon paper is not secure in as far as a copy of the writing remains on the paper. It also non-biodegradable. Therefore environmentally unfriendly as well as highly flammable. As a result, it has been banned in most European countries.
We have a department dedicated to carbonless printing. Its a craft and we intent to keep it that way. So you can be confident that we'll deliver on time. Moreover:
- Our operations are ISO Certified (ISO 12647-2)

Docket book printing is still a labour intensive job. As such books up 50 will be shipped in 5 working days. For higher volume of books it will take 5-7 working days.
Additional printing times may be required for special order inks.
- Delivery is FREE and included in the price. As we print in various Print Centres across Australia, we use StarTrack for shipping overnight to any location.
- StarTrack is part of Australia Post and as such follow the overnight schedule as Express Post.
- CBD and Metro locations are mostly next day.
- If we are printing your item locally, a local courier will be used.
- In any event, a track number is always available to pin point where the items are.
Docket books can be setup in one of two ways. Either as a single sheets of paper like a flyer in which we'll add the margin for the book. Alternatively, you can supply the artwork with the margin in place and the perforation lines indicated by a seperate colour.
Numbering should be included in the artwork in the locations required using RED Arial Font of 18pt with as many all 9's - eg: 9999999.
Finally, we do prefer a Press Ready PDF file. File supplied in other formats will be converted by us to PDF and emailed back again for approval. Our turnaround time naturally is only upon receipt of approval.
