What is a Flyer The definition of a flyer is a cut sheet of paper or board that is not folded. Flyers printed on above 200gsm is also known as Promotional Cards or Marketing Cards. But the common denominator is that that are flat and printed one or two sides. What makes our flyer printing different?
When is a flyer a card?As the name suggests, flyers are sheets which are light weight. The weight of the stock is measure in grams per square meter or gsm. Stock up to 190gsm is considered paper. Stock from 200gsm and over is considered board. Which stock do I use?You may see the term "art" before the stock name: eg: 150gsm artpaper or 350gsm artboard. The definition of "art" is the type of finish to the surface of the paper. Essentially, artpaper and artboard should be used for promotional work. Bond or Laser is paper that does not have a refined finish to the surface. The most common laser or bond paper you will come across is your office paper used in photocopiers. This is also available in board and is suitable for material than needs to be written on with all types of paper. Ideal for form printing, questionnaire printing, feedback and survey sheets.
- All Flyers and Cards are Offset printed CMYK (4 Process Colour).
- We combined hundreds of orders to print them together to provide you with a cheap printing service. This way the setup cost is shared.
- Our offset printing presses print both sides of the sheet in one pass – again making it cheaper for you, and have LED UV drying units installed. Meaning that its ready to cut and pack as soon as its off the press. No more 24 hrs drying time.
You will notice when you click through to our pricing page that the base flyer printing stock is Gloss for lightweight range and just Board for card printing. The Board is a satin finish.
Whats with the Gloss and Matt Laminate?
Lamination is the application of plastic over paper. Whilst there is a range of thickness to the lamination film our laminate solution is very thin and hardly adds to the thickness. What it does do however, is produce an extra gloss surface or a subdued and smooth (matt) surface. So if you want it to pop - use gloss. If you want it to be read with ease and feel good in the hand than matts the way to go.
What size should I use for my flyer? To begin with, the smaller the size the cheaper its going to be. We have detailed the standard flyer printing sizes below and provided a summary of uses to guide you in selecting the right size.
Can Aviva Print scale my artwork to a new size?If you have artwork created by a designer to a certain size, we can scale this at no cost. However, it needs to be within the same proportions. Which simply means that if you have an A4 flyer we can scale this to any other A-Series size. Which also means that we cannot scale a DL Flyer to the A-Series size.
Postcard printing is technically 6 x 4" and is derived from the good old postcard. Remember those? This equates to 152.4mm x 101.6mm. However, for marketing purposes Postcard printing is synonymous with the A6 size which is 105 x 74mm.
Being quite small, A6 is usually printed on board to ensure it remains rigid for reading while holding the small sheet. A6 Card Printing is ideal for the following purposes:
- Promotional Handouts
- Direct Mail campaigns
- Table Talkers
- Fact Sheets / Summary Cards
- Table Talkers
DL Flyer printing is the most common size for flyer printing. Its the ideal size to get your message out.
As the size of an DL is a third of an A4 sheets, it is economic and ideal for mass distribution. Given its size, DL flyer printing should be printed on 150gsm paper and up.
The most common use is for distribution to retail or business consumers. With its size falling in the small letter category by Australia Post, its the most economic to content area ratio for promoting your good and services. For distribution to business street and post box addresses, Australia Post is really the only option. Here is a link to their Unaddressed Mail Service. This essentially means your DL Flyer or DL Card will be delivered without being addressed to a person or company.
For residential services or products, there are other third party provides who walk the streets and drop off to letterboxes. Aviva Print has a relationship with several providers of this service who we have vetted and used for many years. For flyer distribution please contact us for a custom quote.
Typical uses for DL Card Printing and DL Flyer printing are:
- Mail Drop distribution
- Invitations / Announcements
- Promotion of Products and Services
- Counter Cards or Rack Cards
- Tall Table Talkers
- Marketing campaign flyers
Counter flyer printing should be on minimum of 250gsm artboard.
A5 Flyer printing is an economic size whilst providing more sheet area to convey your message. Printing a flyer for marketing purposes also means being consistent in branding. So we recommend an A5 size flyer when you need a small run and / or need to keep the branding of your business consistent yet not be constricted in content space.
As the size of an A5 (half and A4) is significant, most A5 flyer printing is done on lightweight artpaper. The most common and therefore the fastest A5 flyer printing is on 150gsm gloss artpaper. Here are some typical uses for A5 flyer printing:
- Promotional Handouts
- Invitations / Announcements
- Fact Sheets / Product Sheets
- Forms / Survey Sheets
- Patient Record Cards
If you intent to have your A5 Flyers sitting in a upright or slightly upright on a counter stand, we recommend a minimum of 250gsm artboard.
A4 Flyer printing is ideal to convey significant information about your product or services. A4 Flyer printing is rarely used to handout to prospects as it provides a large content area and therefore is typically used to convey a greater product or service offering in detail. A4 Flyers and A4 Cards are generally used in corporate communications and fact sheets.
The most common and therefore the fastest A4 flyer printing is on 150gsm gloss artpaper. A4 Flyers which are produced in bulk are generally printed on 150gsm gloss. A4 Card printing is mostly for corporate product purposes and sales kit fact sheets which are typically ordered in smaller volumes due to the volatility of the content. Here are some typical uses for A4 flyer printing:
- Travel Agent Flyers
- Sales Fact Sheets
- Product Data Sheets
- A4 Posters - as single sided 150gsm flyers
- Forms and Survey Sheets
|A3 Printing |
A3 flyer printing is generally single sided and mostly referred to as A3 poster printing. However, there are time when A3 flyers are printed two sides. Also, A3 Card printing is suitable for wobblers or large boards such as promotional table mats.
- A3 Poster Printing on 150gsm Gloss
- Map Printing. Also see Brochure printing if you need them folded.
- Car Yard (Windshield) Sale Posters
- Hand Wobblers for Sporting Events
- Table mats for promotional purposes
- Charts / Graphs and other large pictorial messages

This ensures that your work hits our presses without issues and whilst printing our machines are equipped to scan periodically to measure the colour consistency.
Complimenting this we have experienced staff running our presses to provide that final oversight. But we don’t stop there; we have a dedicated team of staff in each finishing department.
Meaning that the guy who cuts your job to finish size does nothing but operate the guillotine all day long etc.
And of course we have a team of dispatch staff who pack and ship your work and provide a final QA check.
All of which is documented and signed off in each stage to provide an audit trail of your work throughout the printing process. That said:
- Our operations are ISO Certified (ISO 12647-2)
- Your satisfaction of our quality is how we measure this guarantee, subject to our terms of print supply.
- If you are not satisfied with the quality of the print, we will re-print them or refund your money with an apology.
